And the winner is (drum roll, please) … Fare Games Announces “Pho on the Block”

May the best plan win!

Washington Square is on the hunt for a new restaurant, café, coffee shop, or corner kitchen at 1301 Portage Street. The race is on to find the best new food business for this space – so if you’ve got a passion for food and a plan to make it happen, join the Fare Games!

From Vacant to Vibrant

1301 Portage is a cornerstone of Washington Square, situated in the heart of the Edison neighborhood, on the busy Portage Street corridor, just over a mile south of downtown Kalamazoo. Currently vacant, this property has the potential to serve as the crown jewel of an area that’s working to become vibrant once again. Once a bank, drugstore, and eventually the abandoned L.A. Insurance building – this space is ready for a food business to bring new life and make their home here.

Washington Square has a long and varied history, but has always had an important place in the Kalamazoo’s large and diverse Edison neighborhood. In its heyday, Washington Square was a vital community hub, with a bank, grocery, dry cleaner, ice cream shop, and other local retailers that brought people together to shop, eat, talk, and meet their neighbors on the bustling sidewalks of Portage Street.

A guitar shop, dance studio, and sub shop have opened their doors in Washington Square over the past two years, and the vacant space at 1301 Portage is ready for a food-based business to join the group of businesses committed to making this block a vibrant, thriving retail center. For a neighborhood that has a large concentration of fast-food and convenience store food options, this space has the potential to bring fresh and local food to Washington Square, and provide healthier options for Edison neighborhood residents.
